Rich's suggestion for an 1855 setting really caught my imagination, especially in terms of a campaign and implications for on-table play. The latter could throw up some interesting new ideas if we tinker with weaponry. Initial thoughts are that, first, rifles won't be the long range wonder weapon as it will take time to reload each shot. Secondly, shotguns, whilst still pretty lethal at closer ranges will also take longer to reload. So, thirdly then, pistols will be very effective for close - medium range combat due to the amount of lead they can throw out; I also think it would be fun to try to include some of the unusual handguns of this period. Lastly - reload times might inspire more folks to get up close and personal with their Arkansas Toothpicks....
1855 Weaponry
Again, just some suggestions.
Muzzle Loading:
Ammo reloaded in two actions (Task-2)
Rifle 1 Barrel
Handgun 1 Barrel/Chamber
Shotgun 1 Barrel
Derringer 1 Barrel
Revolver Cylinder Change 1 Cylinder
Additional Handgun Types:
Thinking here about categories rather than listing lots of specific guns. This would be to cover the lighter handguns and big "hand cannons". In effect all I'd envisage would be a category between Derringers and the standard Pistol and in addition a Cannon category of heavier pistols, both using standard pistol ranges. To implement this would only involve giving a - to damage for the lighter guns and maybe using a dAv for heavier gun damage.
So, for example, we could include the Pepperbox type pistols ( 4 - 10 shots depending on type ) whose calibre decreased with the number of barrels so that the 4 shot might deliver more damage than the 10 shot type.
We'd also get the heavy 5 and 6 shot revolvers like Walker-Colt Dragoons and Tranters and lighter Colt Navy and Bakers. Also, as not having to reload would be an asset, even the Volcanic Rocket Ball pistols might be worth carrying - Derringer damage but 10 rounds!
